Jobs in Manufacturing: UK Businesses moving production back to Britain

Fabrication & Heavy Industry News 20 Jan 2010

In the past decade many British manufacturers have outsourced production to countries in Asia and Eastern Europe due to lower labour costs. However, a recent report by the EEF and BDO found that in the past two years, one in seven companies surveyed has moved production back to the UK.

The decision to outsource production is now being re-evaluated by British companies due to the increase in freight, energy and commodity costs. According to the manufacturer’s organisation, the EEF, 14% of companies have decided to move their production back to the UK as the cost savings have now been as significant as expected.

This is positive news for the UK’s Manufacturing Industry that has struggled in this tough economy. With production moving back to the UK this could provide hundreds of new jobs across the country and contribute towards the manufacturing industry’s fight against the recession.
