Food manufacturing jobs: Accidents in the workplace cost the food retail sector £2M

FMCG Jobs 16 Feb 2010

According to The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), accidents in the workplace cost society an estimated £800m. In response to these recent findings the HSE are now launching a new hard-hitting campaign, Shattered Lives to tackle the issue. The Shattered Lives campaign is aimed at raising awareness of slips, trips and falls throughout the workplace.

"The Food and Drink Federation fully supports the Shattered Lives campaign. The human and financial costs of such preventative incidents in the food manufacturing sector are extensive and we would urge companies to visit the Shattered Lives website to find out on how they can reduce slips, trips and falls in their organisation" comments Angela Coleshill, HR director for the Food and Drink Federation.

Between 2008 and 2009, in the food retail sector alone, there were 948 major injuries and a further 91 that required workers to take more than three days off as a result of slips, trips and falls, costing the industry over £2m. If the correct health and safety measures had been put in place, these costs could have been avoided.
