British Government: Help or Hindrance to UK Manufacturers?
Fabrication & Heavy Industry News 15 Jul 2009The Manufacturer recently posted an article revealing that many UK SME manufacturers are losing significant amounts of cash due to compliance to government legislation. The Forum of Private Business (FPB) have released figures that manufacturers are forced to spend an average of 35 hours per month on form filling and ticking boxes for government imposed bureaucratic paper work. The suggested loss to manufacturing businesses in the UK is estimated to be more than £1.2 billion per annum. FPB policy representative Matt Goodman said of their research “It shows that complying with red tape remains one of the major cost burdens facing smaller businesses, swallowing up valuable time and money that could be used more profitably elsewhere”.
Co-incidentally this report was posted on the same day that The Manufacturer commented on a report from the EEF suggesting a greater need for government involvement in assisting the UK Manufacturing Industry to become more prosperous. The report titled ‘Manufacturing our Future’ proposes ambitious targets which are intended to drive the UK to being a major player in addressing climate change, one such proposition is a £1 billion pound prize for innovations in commercializing low carbon technologies. They have also called for a return of an ‘Industrial Bank’ and greater government expenditure in support of UK manufacturers.
EEF Chief Executive, Gilbert Toppin said, ‘Manufacturing must play a bigger role in our economy if we are to meet the challenges facing us over the next decade’. He went on to speak how the manufacturing industry can assist in addressing climate change and demographic and security challenges, not to mention deficits in trade and the public sector. He also commented that the Manufacturing sector has its part to play by demonstrating that it had the ambition to make the investments needed to really drive industry forward.
