Environmental & Waste Management Jobs: Reducing Waste during the Festival Season
Environmental News 22 May 2009The summer festival season is fast approaching... and so is the amount of waste.
Landfills throughout the UK are used to tonnes of waste each year from these outdoor events, most of which is not recyclable or biodegradable. Festivals each year create tonnes of rubbish including glass, plastic, polystyrene and food, but around 90% of this waste can actually be recycled with the right facilities and incentives in place.
So what incentives can be put in place to get the public to make a team effort towards reducing waste this year?
Network Recycling UK have the right idea. They have teamed up with Shambala, the music festival with a conscience, to encourage organisers and festival goers to reduce their waste.
Tickets for Shambala will go on sale along with a declaration to get involved in the reduction of waste and help reduce their carbon footprint.
Shambala staff will provide information at the festival regarding waste management and recycling and each member of the public will be given bags to separate their recyclables from their non-recyclables.
Vendors onsite at the festival will also be using biodegradable packaging which will all be composted at local plants.
How will you be contributing this year to reducing your waste and carbon footprint?
