Medical Device Jobs: Recycling medical devices increases in acceptance across the globe

Medical News 26 Feb 2010

The recycling ethic has reached new heights and is now inspiring experts to find uses for redundant pacemakers, teeth, hips, screws, plates and even body fat, taken from dead people!

Britain has been left trailing behind the rest of the world in the re-use of high-tech implants as it increases in acceptance globally. The recycling of high-tech implants taken from dead people is barred in Britain due to hygiene reasons; however a recent scientific study has indicated that it is 100% safe to re-use heart pacemakers. The study followed 12 Filipinos in need of, and unable to afford cardiac care were given recycled pacemakers and after six months all pacemakers were found to be working perfectly with no infections.

Manufacturers in the UK have been disputing these findings and are not in support of the re-use of high-tech implants based on the safety and reliability of the products and the inability to sterilise the devices effectively.
