Medical Devices Jobs: UK needs to invest heavily in scientific research in order to boost economy
Medical News 19 Apr 2010For the last 350 years the UK has held a strong technological advantage, remaining in the top two of the scientific premier league (Martin Taylor, Royal Society). However this technological advancement could now be compromised as the US, China, India, France and Germany increase spending in science to fuel their economies.
The Royal Society has recently published a report outlining the lack of investment going in to scientific research in Britain during the global recession. As suggested in the report, the lack of investment could be a result of Gordon Brown cutting University budgets whilst other countries are increasing their spends.
Martin Taylor, chair of a Royal Society panel which published the report entitled The Scientific Century: Securing our Future Prosperity, has commented, "History shows us that new technologies drive economic development -- look at the industrial and digital revolutions,"
"The UK has been in the top two of the scientific premier league for the last 350 years. It would seem obvious that politicians would recognize the need to invest in this competitive advantage rather than cutting funds,"
