Medical Device Jobs: SME’s in the Medical Device sector seeing little growth in the UK market

Medical News 01 Dec 2009

A new survey by the ABHI/Ernst & Young has indicated little growth in UK sales for the medical device sector in comparison to their export activity. The survey has reflected the results of a similar survey on large companies in 2006 showing a growth of only 2.2% in UK sales compared to a growth of 10% for exports.

These results suggest that medical device manufacturers are moving their investments out of the UK and in to international markets, raising concerns over the future of the UK market.

John Wilkinson, ABHI Director General, said:“Given the dependence of the whole industry in the UK on innovation fuelled by successful SMEs this survey is a cause for considerable disquiet. While applauding the success of companies in developing export business, the absence of a strong and demanding domestic market will inevitably drive businesses overseas in terms of both development and manufacturing jobs.
