Medical Device Jobs: Sterilising Devices through Plasma Technology

Healthcare in the 19th Century has been revolutionised through the serilisation of medical tools and devices, reducing the number of infections acquired through surgery. Although a number of sterilisation techniques have been developed, one device has remained the most widely used in the healthcare industry, the autoclave. The autoclave, acts like a pressure steamer and allows tools to be packed in to sealed containers and then processed, staying sealed and sterile after they are removed (Sciencecentric.com).

Netherlands based independent research organisation, TNO Science and Industry have developed a new way to sterilise medical devices using plasmas. Although it has been known by scientists that plasmas have the ability to kill bacteria and sterlise objects, the issue was that the plasma-sterilised objects would still need to be packed in to a sealed container afterwards. Norbet Koster and his colleagues at TNO Science and Industry have overcome this issue developing a sterilisation process that allows medical devices to be sealed inside a plastic bag and sterilised through plasmas created by electromagnetic fields.

Although this new method of sterilisation is unlikely to replace that of the autoclave it does open up the possibility of sterilising new types of instruments that would otherwise be damaged by the traditional steam and heat methods (Sciencentric.com)
